Choosing GCSE options is an exciting milestone in every pupil's journey at Fulwood Academy. We are committed to ensuring that every pupil and parent is fully informed and supported throughout the process, enabling decisions to be made with confidence.

Launching the Options Process

The options process begins during Year 9, when pupils attend a dedicated assembly led by Mr Johnson. This introduces the options process, explains how option choices work, and outlines the key stages that will follow.

Pupils then take part in a dedicated Personal Development (PD) session with their tutor or PD teacher. During this session, they explore each subject available, including:

• What they will study.
• How each qualification is assessed (coursework, examinations or a combination of both).
• The skills developed through each subject.
• How subjects can support future education, training and career pathways.

This ensures that pupils begin considering which subjects best match their interests, strengths and aspirations.

Working in Partnership with Parents

Year 9 Parents' Evening plays an important role in the options process.

Parents have the opportunity to discuss their child's progress with subject teachers, helping them make informed decisions about future study. During the evening, every family receives a comprehensive GCSE Options Booklet containing detailed information about each course on offer.

In addition, the academy delivers dedicated information sessions for parents, providing further guidance on:

• How the options process works.
• How choices are allocated.
• Factors to consider when selecting subjects.
• The support available throughout the process.

We strongly encourage both parents and pupils to work together when making these important decisions.

Submitting Option Choices

Following the information sessions, pupils are asked to complete their Options Form, selecting both their preferred choices and reserve choices.

Every effort is made to allocate pupils their preferred subjects wherever possible, while also ensuring that curriculum planning, staffing and timetabling can be successfully achieved across the academy.

Confirming GCSE Subjects

Once all option choices have been carefully considered and processed, pupils receive confirmation of their GCSE subjects at our GCSE Ready Evening before the end of the summer term.

This important event provides families with key information about beginning Key Stage 4, including:

• Expectations for Years 10 and 11.
• Attendance and commitment.
• Independent study and revision.
• Preparing for GCSE success.

Option confirmation letters are issued during the evening, allowing pupils and families to begin preparing for the next stage of their education before the new academic year begins.
