Literacy

Literacy at Fulwood Academy

At Fulwood Academy, we believe that strong literacy is the foundation of academic success and a vital life skill. Through our core values of We Care, We Challenge, and We Commit, we ensure that every pupil develops the reading, writing and communication skills needed to thrive across the curriculum and beyond school. We care deeply about removing barriers to learning, ensuring that no pupil is left behind in developing the literacy skills that allow them to access knowledge and express their ideas confidently. We challenge our pupils with ambitious vocabulary, rich texts and high expectations for communication in every subject. Above all, we commit to providing the support, teaching and opportunities necessary for all pupils to become confident readers, articulate speakers and effective writers who can fully engage with the world around them.

Why Literacy Matters

Literacy is central to success in education and in later life. The ability to read fluently, understand complex texts, communicate ideas clearly and write effectively enables pupils to access the full curriculum and participate confidently in society. Reading, in particular, plays a crucial role in developing knowledge, vocabulary and critical thinking, allowing pupils to engage with increasingly challenging ideas across all subjects.

At Fulwood Academy, we recognise that literacy is not the responsibility of one subject alone. Instead, it is a whole-school priority, embedded across the curriculum so that pupils continually develop their reading, writing and spoken language skills in every lesson. By explicitly teaching subject-specific vocabulary, modelling high-quality reading and writing, and creating regular opportunities for discussion and extended writing, we support pupils in becoming confident and independent learners.

For pupils who arrive with gaps in literacy, we provide targeted support and intervention to ensure they quickly develop the skills needed to access learning successfully. Our ambition is that every pupil leaves Fulwood Academy as a confident reader, an effective communicator and a thoughtful writer, equipped with the literacy skills required for further study, employment and life beyond school.
