The opportunity to study post-16 is a very special one. The student has the complete choice of subject for the first time in his or her life. They have the option of taking subjects which have a direct bearing on a profession, such as Biology and Chemistry which lead to the study of medicine. Or they can pick their best subjects which inevitably lead to the highest grades because a student enjoys their study. Or they can choose a totally new subject to them, such as Business Studies or Politics.
Post-16 allows greater study in depth and breadth. A student can start to master the subject. A Levels and Level 3 BTECs demand an individual response. No longer will it be good enough to trot out ‘the teacher’s opinion’. The student is asked for their response to great literature, language and problems. It demands a development of a student’s self-discipline, and ability to work hard and consistently. The demands are considerable on a Sixth Form student.
Fulwood Academy has a unique offer for its Sixth Form students. It will have a strong Pastoral support, a continuity of education, small specialised Sixth Form teaching and an all-round opportunity to develop interests, character and a c.v. to match with the exciting Fulwood Academy Award. I am delighted that our new Head of Sixth Form, Paul Taylor, has joined the Academy to run our programme. He and I will be delighted to discuss the offer in more detail.
